Oh, my darlings, do I have something lovely to show you today!! This glorious pink and blue Belperron necklace has been on my mind ever since Sotheby’s first sent out press previews of this sale and I couldn’t resist sharing it with you.
A glorious pink and blue Belperron necklace.
Your jaws have probably joined mine on the floor now that I’ve given you a glimpse of this spectacular beauty. Isn’t it gorgeous?!!? The colors, the shapes, the beauty of the composition!
This pink and blue Belperron necklace was made in France circa 1966 and features pink topaz, morganite, aquamarine, and diamonds in a variety of faceted round, cushion cut, Old European cut, pear, oval, and half-moon shapes.
If you’ve been following Diamonds in the Library for a while, you know of my love for jewels that showcase dramatic color contrasts – especially with warm and cool colors together – so it will not shock you that this piece has been haunting my dreams.
Susanne Belperron is one of my very favorite historical jewelry figures, and not just because of her extraordinary, game-changing, timelessly gorgeous designs. Belperron is also known for rarely signing her jewelry, instead saying “my style is my signature” and relying on her unapologetically bold aesthetic to be instantly recognizable.
Belperron led her own jewelry design house in a time when that was nearly unheard of for women and is widely considered one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, but she was more than that: she was a woman of conviction who was an active member of the resistance against the Nazi regime in 1940’s France.
A badass, trailblazing woman who stood up for what is right in a scary time when resistance could have cost her everything and who had so much confidence in her work that she didn’t even sign it? Suzanne Belperron truly could not be any cooler.
To learn more about Suzanne Belperron, I recommend this fabulous out-of-print book (currently available at various prices here, here, or here). The Belperron website also has a great historical timeline of the designer’s life.
This necklace is a symphony of surprises, from the unexpected color combination to the unusual stone shapes and atypical way the stones are arranged, and that’s exactly why I love it so much.
At first glance, it’s just a big, pretty, shiny treasure, but the more you look at it, the more this pink and blue Belperron necklace reveals itself to be something truly exceptional.
This treasure sold yesterday as part of Sotheby’s December 8th A Legacy of Elegance, Jewels from an Exceptional Collection sale, so it is too late for me to buy it, but it’s not too late for one of you to surprise me with it as a gift.
Here’s a peek at some of the other standout lots of this Sotheby’s sale! That ruby and diamond laurel leaf necklace by Boucheron in particular is a stunner.
What do you think, my lovelies? Do you love this pink and blue Boucheron necklace as much as I do, or is one of the other lots from this auction calling to you more strongly?
