The Imperfects by Amy Meyerson.
This book is: a family drama, historical romance, and jewelry adventure rolled into one.
Other elements: the love of a difficult family, relationships over time, family history, the Florentine diamond.
Read it: if you love beautifully-woven interpersonal relationships, layered family stories, or jewelry.
Oh I have such a great book to share with you today, my darlings! First I’m going to tell you all about it and then I will tell you how you can win your very own SIGNED copy.
The Imperfects by Amy Meyerson follows the lives of the Miller family as Deborah and her adult children are united by a family tragedy: the death of their grandmother, Helen. The family comes together for the first time in many years to sit Shiva and founds themselves in an unexpected position when Helen’s will turns out to include a yellow diamond brooch that just may contain the Florentine Diamond, one of history’s most important and spectacular lost gems.
Helen’s death and the discovery of the diamond lead the family down a complicated road as they attempt trace the stone and their own family’s history, while also attempting to rebuild family relationships that were also almost lost to the passage of time.
This story is beautifully written. It’s one of those stories that’s just a pleasure to sink into and allow it to envelop you. I told Amy when we emailed about today’s giveaway that her pacing was beautiful, and even though that’s kind of a weird thing to say, it really was one of my favorite things about the book. I loved watching the story unfold.
My other favorite thing about the book was, of course, the Florentine Diamond. As far as I’m concerned, the Florentine was a character in this book and I couldn’t get enough. Also, how thrilling would it be to find one of the world’s most famous missing jewels in your own grandmother’s house?
I know you’re all opening a new tab to Google the Florentine diamond, so I will save you the trouble:
Hooly moly, right? There are very few pictures of it in existence, but that black and white image on the far left shows the hatpin that was its last known home. I definitely wouldn’t mind discovering that this luscious thing somehow had a connection to my own family tree. I don’t think any of my ancestors had a little known connection to the Hapsburgs, though, unfortunately.
I am so excited to have the chance to give away THREE signed copies of The Imperfects by Amy Meyerson! This Instagram-only giveaway is a quick one, so be sure to enter before noon on Saturday! Details here.
