Cartier orchid ring.

Oh, Cartier. You make such fabulous things, whether they’re delicate, bold, or in-between. This one is not in-between. It is bold as bold can be.

This Cartier orchid ring – white gold, pink and purple sapphires, brilliant-cut diamonds – comes to us from Cartier’s Sortilège collection. It is designed to resemble an orchid, and I think the shape is stunning. It’s like a beautiful, carefully frozen explosion.

Via Diamonds in the Library.I’ll just say this: it would take one hell of a cocktail dress to stand up to this Cartier orchid ring. I think a simple, high-quality LBD or LWD would be the way to go. Or maybe a more colorful dress, like green or blue. You certainly wouldn’t have to worry about being noticed, with this on your finger.

Antique diamond flower necklace.

Something you’re going to learn about me is that I have a weakness for diamond necklaces shaped like flowers.

A Victorian antique diamond flower necklace.

This one, from the last quarter of the 19th century, is really spectacular. It’s an articulated series of old mine and single-cut diamond flower blossoms, mounted in silver-topped gold. I think what makes this necklace special is how carefully the flowers and leaves are shaped. The necklace isn’t symmetrical, which  creates the feeling that it’s something that was grown rather than made.

Victorian ‘tri-gold’ amethyst and diamond ring.

This ring is simply spectacular. A huge, deep purple amethyst set in a gold ring of diamond-centered flowers. It’s Victorian, circa 1880. Definitely a design that stands up to the test of time.

Fourtane doesn’t give a carat count for that amethyst, but it looks like a serious Ring Pop of a jewel to me. A cocktail ring extraordinaire.
